Modding and Things – AKA #Blaugust Day 15

So I have a brain fart again yesterday, and completely didn’t realize I hadn’t blogged until it was time for me to go to work at night. Looks like I’ll have to do another day of make-up posting! (Maybe)

So, if you follow me on twitter, you may know that i’ve recently gotten into modding for Skyrim. It’s a really interesting thing to me, because it lets me change some things about the base game that I don’t like, and make them more or less powerful, make myself more or less powerful, make everything in general just more to my tastes. (I’m not going out creating god mode things or anything like that, it’s just not me). Of course, i’m still a beginner so the mods i’ve made are pretty much the simplest little creations as far as technical skills go, but nevertheless i’m pretty proud of what i’ve done.

Another thing that’s really intrigued me about modding in general (not just my own mod making) is the community behind it. If you were to go google “skyrim mods” you’d find thousands of different pages. There’s youtube channels, podcasts (probably), websites, all kinds of shit dedicated to modding this game. It’s no understatement to say that modding has seriously helped the sustainability and replayability of the game as well. Hell, this November Skyrim will be 4(!!!) years old, and yet this game is continually made new and fresh by mods and updates and things like that. The modding community is ridiculously active, but on top of that it’s also EXTREMELY friendly. Hop on over to the Skyrim Nexus and you’ll see that, even now, new mods are being produced and updated every day. And on the most popular mods you’ll see FLOODS of comments thanking the authors, making suggestions, looking for ideas for their own mods, etc etc etc. I think, for me, it’s a way of participating in a community without having direct contact, which can be nice when my brain weasels start running their yaps.

Why am I telling you all of this? I haven’t the foggiest idea. I’m just trying to think of something to talk about so I can have a make up post for Blaugust, and this was on my mind. See? That’s pretty much how this blog works. Happy weekend folks.

ETA: So, I *guess* I could’ve put the link to my mods in here, so if anyone is interested, here you go.

  1. I’ve dabbled in modding for Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, but never completed anything. I’ve decided to depend on other modders to make stuff I like instead.
What kind of stuff are you modding? Just simple stat tweeks, or more involved modifications? Have you made anything public yet?

    • I edited my original post to add links to the 2 mods that I put up on the nexus. They’re very simple. One is to make unarmed combat more viable by expanding on the “Fists of Steel” perks, and the other just makes the duration of the Shrines’ blessings a bit longer. (They always seem to run out too quickly to me)

      • Cool. I tracked them both and will give them a go next time I delve into Skyrim. I was interested in a more hand-to-hand character, but had to make a khajiit as they were the only ones viable for me to do that.

  2. Mods can be really hit or miss with me. Some go too far and break immersion or the overall feel of a game. Still, there are others that fit into a game and its lore perfectly. Those I cannot cherish enough!

    • I definitely understand what you mean about breaking immersion. I’ve downloaded a few mods and played with them and then completely erased them in less than an hour because I just hated how it felt. I only have 2 mods up, but i’ve tried to keep them within the scope of what feels “natural” to Skyrim.

  3. Oooo Unarmed mod, I’ve tried a few but willing to give another a go as I find the lack of unarmed combat rather annoying.

Thanks for sharing and good luck with your future mods.

    • Yeah, after playing Morrowind and Oblivion the fact that unarmed isn’t a thing really bothered me. I’d seen a few other mods make unarmed viable through invisible fist weapons and stuff like that, but they change the way you swing, which in turn changes the kill cam moves you get. So I went this route and expanded on the Fists of Steel perks instead, to allow some scaling. It probably still won’t be as good as you can get via 1h or 2h, but it’s definitely a lot more feesible in end-game combat or higher difficulties now, without relying on stacking glitches or other weird bugs.
